Local Chapter Implementation Guide for:

First Aid/CPR/AED for the Workplace
First Aid/CPR/AED for Schools and the Community
(Formerly Community First Aid & Safety)

Introduction: This document is intended to inform instructors and instructor trainers about the current policies for implementing the new program as well as facilitating the update process. Specific program release information currently available from National American Red Cross has been communicated separately and can always be found at www.instructorscorner.com or by contacting your local Red Cross chapter.

While this local guide is designed for the March 31, 2006 release of the First Aid/CPR/AED for the Workplace and First Aid/CPR/AED for Schools and the Community (formerly Community First Aid and Safety) the general outline of local implementation will be similar for most/all of the future program releases.

Your Contact Information: It is extremely important to provide your chapter of authorization (often called your home chapter) with your current contact information including name, address, phone and email. You can update to the new programs anywhere but you will need to make sure your chapter of authorization receives the verification information. If you are unsure where your home chapter is contact any local chapter for assistance.

Program Release: The programs will be officially released on March 31, 2006. You will also be notified via email by the Berkshire Red Cross if we have your current email address. We will also be mailing a special edition of our instructor newsletter to all instructors in early April. Relevant information will also be posted on our new website which can be found at www.redcrossberkshirecounty.org. Please bookmark the site.

Ordering Materials: You can order materials anytime at www.ShopStayWell.com or by calling 800-667-2968. The cost per item is the same as if you ordered through the chapter. Beginning May 1, 2006 you will also be able to order directly through the chapter.

Keep in mind that initial shipping will be on a first ordered, first shipped basis. Please be patient. We will be waiting right along with you! NOTE: New programs will be DVD format ONLY.

Old Materials: As previously noted you must update to the new FA/CPR/AED for the Workplace, Schools and the Community by December 31, 2006. Current program materials no longer be used and must be discarded once you complete the update or by December 31, 2006.

StayWell Returns. Returns are accepted for credit within 180 days from the invoice date in original condition. Contact the location where you purchased your materials (StayWell or your local chapter) for return instructions. This policy applies for current and new program materials.

Update Options: You will be required to have your own copy of the First Aid/CPR/AED for the Workplace, Schools, and the Community Instructor's Manual and CD-ROM and appropriate participant's materials for the programs taught. You must complete the update process by December 31, 2006.

  • Group Orientations: Orientations will be scheduled by May 1, 2006. Regular orientations will be scheduled mornings, afternoons and evenings throughout the next several months. A schedule will be included in the special edition of the instructor's newsletter; available via email and at the chapter; and posted online at www.redcrossberkshirecounty.org. This will allow time for new product delivery and review of the materials by the chapter and by participants who ordered from www.ShopStayWell.com. Participants may also order materials through the chapter when registering for any group orientation. Instructors and instructor trainers attending group orientations will need participant and instructor materials, so we want to be sure to include sufficient order quantities when purchasing new materials. Participants can plan for group orientations to last approximately two to three hours. Large groups of instructors at one location may also contact the chapter to schedule a personal orientation at their location. NOTE: The actual time needed to complete the instructor update will be finalized soon for the online or group orientation version.
  • Online at the Instructor's Corner. If you are registered correctly you will be able to complete the update process and print a verification document which you will need to provide to your home chapter. You will not need a copy of the workplace or schools/community DVD for the online update. NOTE: Instructor Trainers for the program should contact the chapter for IT - related update instructions. Return a completed orientation verification form to your chapter of authorization. The instructor's chapter of authorization will issue a new instructor authorization certificate (C3005) indicating, Lay Responder First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor.
  • Self-Study Orientation. A special CD-ROM (different from the one that comes with the Instructor's Manual) will be required. The CD-ROM will only be available by contacting your local chapter. Quantities will be limited. The self-study option is self-paced, but will take approximately the same amount of time to complete as the online update version. Return a completed orientation verification form to your chapter of authorization. The chapter of authorization will issue a new instructor authorization certificate (C3005) indicating, Lay Responder First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor.
Additional Important Notes (this page will be updated as needed):
  • The current official Implementation Guide for Instructor Trainers and Instructors can be found at http://www.instructorscorner.org/ViewDocument.aspx?DocumentId=2284. We cannot stress enough the value in registering on the instructor's corner. You should do it today! We will even set up an account for you. Let us know how we can help.
  • One instructor certification called Lay Responder First Aid & CPR/AED Instructor. One instructor manual that you can use to teach either the Workplace program or the new Schools and the Community program (formerly Community First Aid & Safety). Both formats will also include information in the instructor's manual and on the appropriate DVD for teaching Bloodborne Pathogens: Preventing Disease Transmission.
  • The new modules for Epinephrine Auto-Injector and Asthma Inhaler training are currently not accepted or recognized by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. According to Massachusetts General Laws instructors may not teach these modules. Massachusetts Red Cross chapters are working diligently to have the programs approved.
  • Lifeguard Training and Emergency Response instructors and instructor trainers are eligible to teach these programs. Simply obtain the proper materials and complete one of the update options and provide documentation to their chapter of authorization.
  • If your business or organization owns AED machines and/or AED trainers you must contact the manufacturer or your salesperson immediately regarding the new AED protocols and how to update your machine/trainer. This should be done ASAP.
