Blood Donations - Local ResponseThe Berkshire County Red Cross joins Red Cross regions across the country in helping to support the New York area with blood needs to assist in caring for victims of today's terrorist attacks in the United States. 80,000 blood donations in the American Red Cross blood inventory are ready to ship to affected areas and will ensure that patients' lives are saved. The Berkshire Red Cross will be holding a blood drive tomorrow, Wednesday, September 12, from 1 to 7 PM and Monday, September 17th from l to 7 PM, here at the Chapter House, 480 West Street, Pittsfield. If there is any change in the hours of these blood drives, we will contact the media immediately. Because there are so many injured, the greatest need for blood will be in the weeks to come. Individuals wishing to donate are highly encouraged to call in advance and make appointments next week and the week after by calling 1-800-462-2229. The Berkshire Red Cross will continue to keep the public up to date on blood drive dates and times. If you are a donor trying to get through to 1-800-462-2229, PLEASE CONTINUE TO TRY. If the lines are busy when you try to call, please try again. Your blood will be used either by patients here in Berkshire County who need your support, or by those in New York who need blood supplies as they battle for their lives. Please be advised that there may be long lines in the next day or so. We are asking for your patience and cooperation during this time. The Red Cross has set up a service center at the Logan Hilton in Boston with mental health workers to assist families of the individuals who were on the flight. Trained Red Cross disaster volunteers should contact their local chapter by calling 442-1506. Information for disaster welfare inquiries is being taken from immediate family members attempting to locate family members. No communication lines are available at this time. Caseworkers will follow-up when they are open. Individuals wishing to make cash donations to benefit bombing victims can send checks earmarked N.Y.
