2001 Berkshire County American Red Cross Youth Leadership Conference
PITTSFIELD, MA-The Berkshire County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold its annual Youth Leadership Conference October 12th to the 14th at Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort. The conference is part of the Red Cross Youth Leadership Program, which provides area high school-age students with an opportunity to develop leadership and project-planning skills through service learning. The Youth Conference was designed to enhance communication skills, develop goal-directed thinking and encourage teamwork. Conference attendees will work as a group to identify issues they feel are problems for Berkshire County. They will spend the next year planning and implementing community service projects that will address these issues.
Special guests at this year's conference will be Vision Warrior-a dynamic speaker on drugs and alcohol who will perform his life's experience as a Hollywood actor who became a homeless person due to drug and alcohol abuse; Ras Moon and the U.N.-an internationally known West African group comprised of artists from around the world, with a smooth, original mix of Cape Verdean and reggae beats; Abdul Baki-a professional musician and instructor at UMASS Amherst, who will teach African drumming; and Ruby Rice-White- a professional artist who will teach dream dancing and support the youth in creating a mural that represents leadership to them. The mural will be displayed at the Berkshire County Red Cross following the conference.
Any high school age youth from Berkshire County that are interested in the conference or the program please call Jodi LaPlante-Santos 442-1506. Conference space is limited. Reservations must be made by September 26, 2001.
