Blended Learning is an educational program that combines online (web-based) lessons with traditional instructor-led training. The Blended Learning initiative began in October 2000 to establish a corporate-wide distance learning initiative targeted at the workplace market. This project has involved the transformation of the First Aid/CPR/AED instructor-led program into a series of "blended learning" courses that includes self-paced, web-accessed knowledge components combined with streamlined instructor-led, hands-on skill sessions. Now any Red Cross Adult CPR, AED and/or First Aid Basics instructor or participant can include this as an option!
The benefits of blended learning - including convenience, self-paced learning and a shortened classroom session - make this offering more attractive to companies that would find it difficult to schedule training that accommodates the work schedules of large numbers of employees. In particular, companies with shift schedules (such as manufacturing facilities or prisons) or companies that can't allow groups of employees off the job for an entire day would find blended learning to be a more flexible way for them to meet training requirements. Blended learning is also an ideal offering for schools because many students are using computers in their classrooms and teachers can fit the courses into their class schedules when it's convenient. Individuals may find this a viable option when traveling to a course site may be difficult. Having to attend only one skills training session for two hours is a better option than to travel one, two or even three three-to-four hour sessions for a traditional course. Blended learning offers another option for Adult CPR, AED and First Aid Basics training.
The scope of the program currently includes all of the basic level First Aid/CPR/AED content with the exception of infant and child CPR. As with traditionally delivered courses, the purpose of the American Red Cross Blended Learning First Aid/CPR/AED Program is to give individuals in the workplace the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, recognize and provide basic care for injuries and sudden illnesses until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.
Features and Benefits Grid

Benefit |
| The knowledge portion of the Red Cross first aid, CPR and AED training Blended Learning Program is offered online, so course participants can access training 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Works for employees taking workplace training or the general community course participant at home. |
|
Web-based "anywhere, anytime" training allows employees to access training at their convenience, preventing conflict with work-related responsibilities. Students can take courses at work or at home after hours from any computer with Internet access. Production workers far from a classroom, or technicians and salespeople on the road, can train as easily as someone sitting at their desk at corporate headquarters. Works for the individual at home, too! |
| |
| Red Cross Web-based learning is individualized and self-paced, allowing course takers to go through the lessons in full or abbreviated form, or test out of lessons altogether. |
|
Unlike training with a group, individuals can learn at their own pace, allowing them to stop and review information whenever necessary to ensure that they completely understand the instruction. Course takers who have taken CPR and first aid training in the past can move quickly through material they know and dwell on only the subjects they need to learn the most. |
| |
| The Red Cross utilizes a blended learning approach, so a Red Cross instructor will conduct an approximately 2-hour skills check and assessment with course takers once they have completed the online portion of the training. |
|
Unlike health and safety training offered completely online, our blended learning approach includes an instructor-led skills session that meets the intent of OSHA's Guidelines for First Aid. |
| |
| Unique participants' products, including skills cards that are easy to read and follow. |
|
Skills cards serve as both a learning and reinforcement tool and a refresher to online learning, so employee training continues long after the training is completed. |
| |
| Nationally recognized course completion certificate. |
|
Training is standardized and recognized by many national, state and local authorities. |
| |
| The American Red Cross has been providing health and safety training to the public for more than 90 years. |
