Berkshire Red Cross 2008 Golf Classic

Volunteers needed for the Berkshire Red Cross 2008 Golf Classic to be held on Monday, August 25th, at the Country Club of Pittsfield. Kay McMahon will be with us for the day as our PGA/LPGA golf teaching professional.

This is our major fund-raising activity of the year and the golf tournament that sets the standard for all others. To continue this event at the level of excellence we strive for it takes many, many volunteers. Please call Millie Blum at 442-1506 ex. 13 to volunteer and state whether you have a task and/or time preference, we will attempt to accommodate your request.

The American Red Cross is pleased to introduce the new online Be Red Cross Ready public educational program. The purpose of this program is to provide participants with the knowledge to prepare for possible disasters and other life-threatening emergencies. Emergency preparedness is a primary role of the American Red Cross and this new online program enables Red Cross to easily reach those who utilize the internet.

The online Be Red Cross Ready program is part of a comprehensive Be Red Cross Ready initiative which is an evolution of and will replace the Together We Prepare program when all program elements release.

The online program content reflects the most up-to-date information available and is in concert with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and includes a change from 5 to 3 actions. Content is updated with the latest science for first aid, CPR and emergency cardiovascular care.

URGENT: WE NEED VOLUNTEER DRIVERS

Our incredible generous and dedicated volunteer drivers make the Medical Transportation Service of the Berkshire County Chapter of the American Red Cross possible. Some volunteers drive every week, while others drive less frequently. We have drivers who like to stay within the County while others prefer the longer trips to Springfield, Worchester or Boston. All trips are for medical necessities such as dialysis treatment, chemotherapy, radiation, and outpatient treatment.

We require an interest in people and a desire to help those without their own means of transportation, a valid drivers license and good driving record, and a standard First Aid/CPR course, which is provided at Red Cross expense.

Please contact Dick Stockwell at 413-442-1506 if you are interested in helping to provide this very important service.

NEW Blended Learning Program

Blended Learning is an educational program that combines online (web-based) lessons with traditional instructor-led training. The Blended Learning initiative began in October 2000 to establish a corporate-wide distance learning initiative targeted at the workplace market. This project has involved the transformation of the First Aid/CPR/AED instructor-led program into a series of "blended learning" courses that includes self-paced, web-accessed knowledge components combined with streamlined instructor-led, hands-on skill sessions. Now any Red Cross Adult CPR, AED and/or First Aid Basics instructor or participant can include this as an option!

Winter Tips from Disaster Services

The Winter season is just around the corner, and our community has the chance right now to take some simple steps that can save lives if we are threatened this year by a storm. The disaster relief workers at the Berkshire County Chapter of the American Red Cross work hard in this community every day to provide relief for those whose lives have been torn apart by disasters. However, in addition to helping after a disaster, the Red Cross mission calls for us to play an equally important role in preparing communities BEFORE disaster strikes so that families can learn ways to stay safe when facing the annual winter season.

Summary:

  • Prepare a Personal Evacuation Plan
  • Assemble a Family Disaster Supplies Kit
  • Prepare for High Winds and Heavy Snow

Medical Transportation

We are pleased to announce that we will be getting a 2002 Dodge Caravan. We put out bids throughout the County and much appreciation goes to Haddad Motors for giving us their best transaction. This now gives the Red Cross four vans, and one sedan for our medical transportation program.

This past year we provided 1,980 medical transportation trips, which is up 35% from the previous year. We provide medical transportation to Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Albany and Vermont. If you are interested in driving we can make it flexible for you. Whether you want to drive once a week or once a month, we can tailor the driving to fit your schedule locally within Berkshire County or long distance within the state.

If you have any questions on the food pantry or medical transportation, call Joe Coates at 442-1506 x16.
